Yesim Candan

Yesim Candan

Author & Youth Ambassador MENA Region at MENA Pearls Foundation

Born out of a Turkish family, Yesim Candan grew up in the city of Rotterdam. After high school she went to study at the Rotterdam International School of Economics, where she was surrounded by cultures from all over the world. During her later studies at the University of Nyenrode, Yesim’s drive to work with people and cultures was invigorated. After her first job at Reckitt Benckiser, she decided to bring her greatest passion into practice: to revitalize the perception in the Netherlands of people with a bicultural background.

Yesim started to work at De Baak Management Centre VNO-CNW and introduced the term ‘bicultural’ into the Dutch language as an alternative for the Dutch word ‘allochtoon’ – which resembles the English noun ‘alien’. Simultaneously, she organized the national competition ‘Inspiration for Integration’ (IFI). Yesim appeared to be a pioneer, who is able to build bridges between corporate life, government and the talented, bicultural Dutch. The success of IFI was mainly due to her positive approach: to finally make clear why a second culture is a powerful and positive added value to corporate life. Yesim was able to charm Prime Minister Balkenende, Ahmed Aboutaleb, Princess Maxima and Neelie Kroes of her project through her power of persuasion and her passion for her work.

YES I’M
At the end of 2009, Yesim launched her own company YES I’M. The play of words by using her own name symbolises her message: be proud of who you are and what you can achieve. Yesim provides lectures and workshops on topics such as diversity, inspiration and networking. Her goal is to connect people and to inspire those she can reach. She believes strongly that everybody deserves a fair chance, which starts out with the access to basic education. Therefore, Yesim donates a fixed part of her revenue to children lacking financial means in Turkey to offer them a fair chance at schooling.
